We had been staying at various places around Smith Lake for a long time and Barney’s Bluff was great and perhaps the best. The option to rent their boat was a fantastic addPosted on AmandaJuly 28, 2025Verified This may be my favorite AirBnb our family has ever rented! It was also our first time taking our two dogs with us on vacation, and Barney’s Bluff couldn’t have made it any easier. The home was clean, comfortable, and homey, with so many thoughtful details and supplies. The lake is spectacular and the location in the cove was exactly what we were looking for. Tim’s guestbook full of information was so helpful — we referenced it multiple times. All this to say, I’d give Barney’s Bluff six stars if I could. We look forward to returning!Posted on NathanJune 6, 2025Verified Beautiful home with everything you need for a great lake vacation! Had a wonderful time and will definitely go back in the future.Posted on AbbyMay 11, 2025Verified This place was beautiful and very peaceful. Is a deposit required to rent Barney’s Bluff?
Full payment is due at booking, including cleaning and pet fees (if applicable). Please list all pets in your reservation.
If you rent the optional pontoon boat, a $1500 security deposit is held on your credit card for incidental costs, damages, or cancellations. Book boat rental at least 48 hours before arrival to avoid a prep fee of up to $100. If canceled within 48 hours (excluding bad weather), $100 of the deposit is forfeited.
Guests are encouraged to photograph any existing damage before boat use and report it.
Is a boating license required to rent the pontoon boat?
Yes. Alabama law requires operators to have a Boater Certificate from an approved safety course, such as:
- BoaterExam.com
- Boat-Ed.com – approved by ALEA Marine Police Division
A copy of your certificate must be provided before boat use.
Safety rules: Everyone must wear a properly fitted life vest, including pets (which we recommend bringing). The operator must attach the Emergency Cut Off Switch lanyard to their vest while driving. Noncompliance may result in fines by Marine Patrol.
Do I need to reserve the pontoon boat?
Yes. Though the pontoon boat is exclusively for current guests, it should be reserved at least 48 hours prior to arrival so the maintenance crew can prepare it. Late reservations may incur a $100 prep fee. You can use the boat on any of the days that you are staying, as long as you do not exceed the number of days that you have rented the boat.
Are there age restrictions to rent or operate the pontoon boat?
Yes, operators must be at least 25 years old and have a valid boater certificate on hand during operation.
Can I bring my pet on the boat?
No. Pets are not allowed on the pontoon boat to prevent damage and subsequent loss of deposit money.
Can I bring my own boat or jet ski?
Yes, there is an open boat slip under the dock roof and ample perimeter space for boats. Typically, one jet ski port is also available.
What should I bring to Barney’s Bluff?
The home is well-stocked for a lake stay, but you might want to bring:
- Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses (with leash)
- Waterproof tote or backpack
- Bug spray and insect bite remedy
- Water shoes or flip-flops
- Reusable water bottles
- Groceries
Is parking available at Barney’s Bluff?
Yes. The property features a large gravel driveway with space for at least 3 vehicles. The access road is about 12 feet wide with roughly 12 feet height clearance.
There is a lower parking area behind the garage, which is useable ONLY when it’s dry; if it is wet the slope of the driveway and the potential soft mud can make parking unpleasant in that area. Please don’t use this area unless the ground is COMPLETELY dry.

Nearby options include:
- Country Mall Convenience & Hardware – Crane Hill, 4 miles (basic food, snacks)
- Dollar General – Crane Hill, 9 miles (basic food, snack and supplies)

About the Area
Barney’s Bluff is centrally located on Smith Lake along a quiet dirt/gravel country road, adjacent to farmland – you may see some cows along the way. The country road is accessed by a paved county road that winds through rolling hills and farm land of Cullman County. There is a small but well-stocked general store with food/drinks, groceries, pizza, gas/diesel, fishing/boating and hardware supplies about 8 minute’s drive from Barney’s.
Your best bet for getting to Barney’s, as well as getting around this area of Smith Lake while you are here, is to have your own vehicle or rental. Public transportation, taxi and rideshare services are scarce and may be relatively costly when available. I do not consider bicycling a good option because there are many winding roads with blind curves, which are typical along the waterfront properties.
